The new English Language and Culture Institute at South Dakota State University is seeking a talented and highly motivated individual to join our team as an ESL Instructor. We are seeking one full-time 9 mo. instructor and one 45% time 9 mo. Instructor. The ESL Instructor will teach Intensive ESL Program classes and cultural programs. This position will also assess and evaluate the proficiency development of Intensive ESL Program participants as they move through the program. Additionally, this individual will help support the needs of all English language learners on campus.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES (workload reduced accordingly for part-time position):

Teach academic English to non-native speakers of English for 15-20 hours in one of the following courses: Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking, and American Culture. Organize instructional planning according to objectives in IEP curriculum. Work collaboratively on different committees within the department and across campus. Mentor and collaborate with other faculty, providing insight into best practices for implementation of various committee objectives. Attend and participate in faculty and committee meetings. Collaborate and cooperate with fellow ELCI instructors and staff. Oversee the continuous improvement of courses to strengthen their content, to include coverage of all curricula. Provide academic advisement for ELCI students including, but not limited to scheduling, registration, academic intervention, and success strategies.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL/ESL, Applied Linguistics, English, Foreign Language(s), Language Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or related field by start date.
  • Minimum of one year experience teaching in the fields of ESL, Language Education, Foreign Languages, Composition, and/or Reading.
  • Experience working with non-native speakers of English.
  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective critical thinking and reasoning.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching ESL abroad.
  • ESL teaching experience, especially at the Undergraduate level.

 

SALARY:

The salary is competitive and based on qualifications.

The English Language and Culture Institute is a new program at SDSU.
